Post-Operative rehabilitation in Bangkok
Get back to the life you want with a structured programme built around your surgery, your phase and your goals
Post-operative rehabilitation or Post-surgery rehabilitation is the structured program of physiotherapy, movement, and clinical treatment that helps restore your strength, mobility and function after surgery.
The surgery fixes the structural problem.
Rehabilitation determines how well you actually recover and how quickly you return to the life you want to live.
At Form Recovery & Wellness in Bangkok, we specialise in post-surgical recovery for patients at every stage, from the first week after discharge through return to sport, full activity, and beyond. Our
physiotherapists, TCM practitioners, and Applied Thai Traditional Medicine practitioners work together on your case, which means you have access to a broader range of clinical tools than a standard physiotherapy
clinic can offer. The result is a programme that can address pain, swelling, range of motion, strength, and nerve recovery simultaneously not sequentially.
Form Recovery and Wellness provides post-operative rehabilitation in Bangkok for patients whose surgery was done in Thailand or overseas, including ACL reconstruction, knee and hip replacement, rotator cuff repair and back surgery. Rehab at Form Recovery is staged from early swelling control through to return to activity. It can combine physiotherapy, aqua therapy, acupuncture and Medical Lymphatic Drainage Massage (at the Asoke and Thonglor clinics). Bring your discharge summary and your surgeon’s rehab protocol to your first assessment.
We know surgery is stressful. The recovery period can be equally so, especially when progress slows, when nobody is testing whether you’re actually ready for the next phase, or when your surgeon has
cleared you but your body doesn’t feel ready. These are exactly the situations we are here to resolve.
Surgical procedures that affect your mobility will also affect your lifestyle. The surgery might have addressed the major issues in your joints, muscles, or ligaments but they need to heal, strengthen and retain their full range of motion so you can get back to your normal state. However, this is all easier said than done.
Don’t go in for surgery before considering your rehabilitation plans as your preparation can make a huge difference in your recovery. By working with Form Recovery and Wellness’ team of professionals in advance, you’ll have an effective “Pre-Hab” and Post-Operative Rehabilitation plan so you can get back to living your best life as soon as possible.

how a strong post-operation rehab plan Helps You
- Managing your pain more effectively
- Strengthening your weakened and atrophied muscles
- Stretching the muscles that are stiff and unable to reach their previous range of motion
- Improving your posture incrementally
- Providing practical advice on how to live while rehabilitating your injury
- Helping you regain confidence and creating a timeline for your full recovery
- Improving your blood circulation
- Monitoring your exercises and results and progressively increasing load to bring you back to your normal mobility
While many of our clients take up our Post Operative Rehab routines, we highly encourage you to consider Pre-hab as well. When used together, Pre-hab makes Post-Operative Rehab more effective. People who are going to undergo surgery can elect for Pre-hab as soon as they know the date of their procedure. A certified physiotherapist will need to assess each case individually to come up with a customised Pre-hab plan. Get in touch with us as soon as you know your surgery dates and we’ll create your customised rehab plan.
You may have come to us because one of these sounds familiar
- You're recovering from surgery that was performed in another country and have returned to Bangkok without a structured rehabilitation protocol
- Your pain and swelling are not improving in line with what your surgeon told you to expect
- You feel stable enough day-to-day but you're not confident enough to return to sport, exercise, or the physical demands of your job
- You were discharged from hospital with a physiotherapy referral but haven't been able to book in — or your sessions have been sporadic and you feel like you're going backwards
- You've passed an arbitrary time milestone but your surgeon hasn't given you a clear plan for what happens next
- You don't know what you're missing
How we manage post-op rehab
We take your personal circumstances into account when it comes to setting up an effective rehabilitation plan for you by following these 3 steps:
Listen First
Before we prescribe anything, we want to understand your surgery — what graft was used, what your surgeon's protocol says, where you are in your recovery, and what your goal actually is. Getting back to competitive football is a different program from getting back to weekend hiking. We build your plan around your goal.
Guide you through every phase
ACL rehabilitation has six distinct phases, each with specific goals and measurable milestones. We don't advance you to the next phase on a calendar date. We advance you when your body is ready — and we test that objectively. Quad strength symmetry, hop tests, range of motion, agility benchmarks: these are the checkpoints that determine your progression.
Get you back properly.
Return to sport is not the finish line. Return to sport with strength symmetry above 90%, passing hop test criteria, and psychological readiness is the finish line. We stay with you until you cross it.
Team Based Approach. Our ultimate goal is to get you back to doing the things you love without painkillers, injections, and surgeries. We do that by involving our entire team. Every case is regularly reviewed by the Head of each Department to give you the highest chance of success. It is thus not uncommon for our team to recommend a multi-disciplinary approach between Physiotherapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Alternative Thai Medicine. However, after the consultation, we will recommend the treatment method that best suits your needs, whether that’s a combination of therapies or a single method.
Which Surgery Are You Recovering From?
Post-operative rehabilitation is not one-size-fits-all. Recovery after a knee replacement is a completely different programme from recovery after ACL reconstruction or spinal fusion. Each surgery has different precautions, different tissue healing timelines, different milestone criteria, and different end goals.
Back Surgery Rehabilitation
Knee Replacement Rehab
ACL Surgery Rehabilitation
Hip Replacement Rehabilitation
Rotator Cuff Surgery Rehabilitation
Your physiotherapist will recommend a combination based on your graft type, your current phase, and what your knee is telling us at each assessment. You are never prescribed treatments you don’t need.
Have a question?
What Can You Expect From a Structured Rehab Program at Form Recovery
Without structured post-operative rehabilitation, outcomes are measurably worse across all major surgical procedures. Muscle inhibition does not resolve on its own with rest. Scar tissue forms unpredictably without appropriate mobilisation. Joint stiffness that becomes established is significantly harder to recover than stiffness that is managed from the outset. And patients who return to activity without meeting objective readiness criteria face substantially higher re-injury risk.
With a structured, milestone-based post-operative rehabilitation programme at Form Recovery & Wellness, you can reasonably expect:
- Honest, regular communication about where you are, what the next goal is, and how close you are to getting there
- Pain and swelling that responds to treatment and does not limit your progression between sessions
- Restoration of full range of motion within the expected timeframe for your procedure
- Progressive return of muscle strength in the operated area, tested and tracked throughout recovery
- Scar tissue that remains mobile and does not restrict movement
- Neuromuscular control and proprioception sufficient for safe return to daily activities and then to more demanding physical tasks
- A clear, progressive return to the activities that matter to you — with objective testing at each milestone rather than a calendar date
- Reduction in secondary injury risk through appropriate loading, movement retraining, and strength symmetry testing before return to activity
When should you seek professional Post-Op Physiotherapy?
Ideally, structured physiotherapy begins within the first week after surgery — often while you are still in hospital. But if you are already further into your recovery and experiencing any of the following, come and see us now rather than continuing to wait:
- Your range of motion is not improving week-on-week by the expected amount for your procedure
- You have significant swelling that is not reducing — or is getting worse after activity
- Your muscle strength in the operated area is noticeably weaker than the opposite side and is not catching up
- You are experiencing unexpected pain that is increasing rather than decreasing
- You have not been formally tested for return-to-activity or return-to-sport readiness and you are approaching or past the recommended milestone timeframe
- You had surgery abroad and have returned to Bangkok without a structured follow-up rehabilitation plan
- Your recovery has stalled and nobody has given you a clear explanation of why or a path forward
None of these are signs of failure. They are signs that you need better clinical support — and that is exactly what we are here to provide.

I want to express my sincere gratitude to the team at Form Recovery and Wellness @ Asoke, particularly physiotherapists Kaew and Prae, as well as Dr. Praew, Dr. Ning, and Dr. Nan. My wife underwent post-operative physiotherapy rehabilitation for a hand injury involving two severed nerves and tendons. The care provided was exceptional, with a personalized treatment plan tailored to her needs. The team's professionalism and compassion were evident throughout, and they allowed me to accompany my wife during every procedure. Thank you to the entire team at Form Recovery and Wellness @ Asoke for their expertise and support during this challenging time. We are truly thankful for the quality care received.+3Posted on Google![]()

Went here after surgery on my tibia head a few weeks ago. Making an appointment was easy for next day. First consultation ist free. Hugo took his time to study all my X-rays and medical reports. He made a rehabilitation plan for me. And so we did. After every session with him I felt more confident and less painful. He promised me, that I can handle stairs with my crutches. And it worked! Hugo is very patient, doesn’t push me anytime, communicative and he provided many useful informations to speed up the healing process. Loved going there. The place is very well equipped, clean, relaxing. They also offer home visit for an extra fee, which I found very helpful with a broken leg. Definitely recommend to go here.+2Load more

Frequently Asked Questions
In most cases, physiotherapy begins within 24–48 hours of surgery — often while you are still in hospital. Early mobilisation and swelling management are critical in the first days and cannot be adequately replaced by rest alone. The exact timeline for starting outpatient physiotherapy at our Bangkok clinics depends on your specific procedure and your surgeon’s post-operative protocol, but the earlier structured rehabilitation begins, the better the outcome evidence suggests.
Post-operative physiotherapy is phase-based and milestone-driven, and must work within your surgeon’s specific post-operative precautions — movements and loads that are restricted to protect the surgical repair while tissue heals. Regular physiotherapy for a sports injury or chronic condition does not have the same tissue healing timelines, precaution management, or need for formal return-to-activity testing. Post-op rehab also requires close coordination with your surgeon’s protocol throughout the recovery.
No referral is required to book a consultation at Form Recovery & Wellness. However, we always review your surgical documentation and coordinate your rehabilitation with your surgeon’s post-operative
guidelines to ensure your programme is safe and appropriately timed. If you don’t have documentation, we can work from standard evidence-based protocols for your procedure type.
This depends on your surgery and your goal. ACL reconstruction typically requires 30+ sessions over 9–12 months. Knee and hip replacement patients typically need 16–24 sessions over 3–6 months. Rotator cuff repair typically requires 20–30 sessions over 6–9 months. Back surgery recovery varies widely. We provide a realistic estimate at your initial consultation — including frequency, total sessions, and expected timeline to each milestone.
Yes. We regularly work with patients who had surgery in the UK, Australia, the United States, Singapore, or elsewhere in Asia and returned to Bangkok for their rehabilitation. Bring your surgical discharge summary, operative report, and your surgeon’s rehabilitation protocol if available. We can also work from standard evidence-based protocols for your procedure type if documentation is not
available.
Form Recovery provides rehab after ACL reconstruction, knee replacement, hip replacement, rotator cuff repair and back surgery. Each plan follows your surgeon’s protocol where one is available and is staged from early recovery through to return to activity.
Yes. Medical Lymphatic Drainage Massage is performed by Applied Thai Traditional Medicine practitioners at Form’s Asoke and Thonglor clinics, to help with swelling after surgery. After liposuction, it is normally recommended from day 3. Your surgeon’s instructions always come first.
